Summer Experience with the Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s (LASP) Chester County Division – Jordan Jackson

I had the pleasure of spending my summer interning for Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s (LASP) Chester County Division, located in West Chester, PA. Most of my summer was devoted to the Chester County Mobile Home Tax Reassessment Project: an annual initiative run by LASP and United Way of Chester County to help mobile homeowners reassess their property taxes. I was tasked with completing interviews, calculating fair market values, corresponding with clients and finally preparing physical files for our hearings this fall. I am proud to say that this project has helped over 1,000 clients save hundreds of dollars on their property taxes, and we added 60 more to the list this year! When I was not working on this project, I was assisting attorneys with expungement, social security and landlord tenant cases, as well as presenting to caretakers at the GrandFamilies Custody Workshop about Custody, Guardianship and Dependency legal options. Not only has my desire to become a lawyer grown through this internship opportunity, but I feel increasingly equipped and inspired to study law and use it for the incredible work that LASP does.

This blog is a part of a series of reflections from recipients of the Career Services Summer Stipend. We’ve asked recipients to reflect on what they participated in over the summer. To read the rest of the series, you can find them here.
