We hope that you’re looking forward to some well deserved time off with family and friends during the Thanksgiving holiday.
In addition to hopefully delicious food, relaxation, and getting together with loved ones, we recognize that holiday mealtime conversations can be stressful. In particular for seniors, you may encounter some version of “So, what are plans after graduation?” If this question fills you with dread, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

Here are four facts and reminders to help you more confidently navigate through career related conversations over the holidays:
1) You’re right on time.
The majority of Swarthmore seniors don’t finalize their post-graduation plan until spring semester or later.
- Fun Fact: For the Class of 2025, 72% of those employed did not receive their job offers until the spring semester or after graduation.
Beyond some large employers in a select number of industries that participate in early recruiting, most organizations hire on an as needed basis, which is why so many students receive their job offers close to (or even after) graduation.
2) Resume building opportunities before graduation exist.
Paid 20 & 40 hr Swatworks projects are still available for winter break.
- Fun Fact: Last year, almost a quarter of the 72 Swatworks winter break projects were completed by seniors. This can be a great way to get resume-building experience, mentored by Swarthmore alumni.
3) You don’t have to do it alone.
Graduating Swatties who utilize Career Services are more likely to be employed after graduation – AND we are open over much of winter break for advising appointments!
- Fun Fact: For the Class of 2024, graduating seniors who made use of Career Services had employment rates almost 20 percentage points higher than those who did not.
Whether you are still refining your interests, considering gap year options, applying to graduate programs, or shooting for that dream job, we’re here to help meet you wherever you are in your process.
4) Everyone’s journey is different.
Have you ever looked at the profiles of Swarthmore alumni (or anyone) in positions you admire?
- Fun Fact: Oftentimes, those in similar roles have varying backgrounds, experiences, and credentials.
