Dear Graduates: The Artful Use of AI

The rise of generative AI has transformed the job application process. While these tools can be a lifesaver for overcoming “blank page syndrome,” they’ve also introduced a new set of unwritten rules and high-stakes technical traps. There are effective, professional ways to use AI, but students should also be mindful of the potential risks and pitfalls it can introduce.

AI In the Workplace:

  • Clarify AI-policies on job application materials. While some employers do not mind or may even encourage demonstration of AI-related skills, others prohibit AI use in the crafting of job application materials and will eliminate candidates from consideration for doing so. Before submitting application materials, seek out specific reference to such AI-related expectations in the job description as well as on the organization’s career page.

Even when AI-use is acceptable, it should be used thoughtfully. In many cases, AI generated cover letters and resumes are easy to spot and feel overly generic, often use over formalized language, contain generic buzzwords like”results-driven” or “team player,” don’t account for nuances in job description, and lack personal touches that showcase a candidate’s passion or desire for specific roles or companies.

Remember, your application materials are still YOURS, they should speak to who you are. When using AI platforms to create or revise your application materials, consider it a rough draft. You still want to review it thoroughly, talk about your accomplishments, make sure it is specific to individual jobs, and reflect the language in the job description.
