Position Overview

We are seeking a Field Engineer to support the planning, design, and verification of utility and telecommunications infrastructure. This role involves both field and office-based responsibilities, with a strong emphasis on on-site data collection, utility pole design, construction documentation, and coordination with municipalities and third-party attachers. Please note: this is not a traditional desk job—fieldwork is a significant component of the position. You will spend considerable time outdoors, working throughout the scenic region of Northern Vermont.

Pay: $25-28/hr Full-time with overtime opportunities. Relocation assistance is available for candidates residing outside the service territory. A company vehicle, gas card, and per diem are also provided.

Job Duties

  • Perform field audits of existing utility infrastructure by visually identifying, inspecting, and recording information.
  • Operate hand-held computers, GPS units, cameras and/or other field technology.
  • Collect field notes, collaborate with internal teams to notify municipal, state, or telecommunications contacts, stake jobs on-site, and use NISC’s MapWise platform to generate construction paperwork and documentation.
  • Drive, operate, and maintain a company vehicle in a variety of terrains and surfaces.
  • Perform make-ready ride-outs with third-party attachers to assess necessary pole replacements and construction work.
  • Transpose the design solution to other software platforms specifically: utilize various CAD programs to complete a 2-D design print, utilize various CU/MU (Compatible/Macro Unit) programs to complete a design estimate, complete cost causation analysis and assign a percentage of incurred construction cost to any involved parties, as outlined by the utility specific specifications, utilize various notification programs to communicate the design work being completed to other involved parties
  • Apply engineering principles and compliance standards to complete the design of aerial and underground utility facilities including: remedy any National Electric Safety Code violations, perform pole loading analysis, incorporate utility specific standards and specifications.
  • Stake replacement installations including reclosers, regulators, and other miscellaneous equipment.
  • Communicate and collaborate with client and other project stakeholders to meet project performance expectations.
  • Ensure the proper care and maintenance of any vehicle and equipment assigned including regular inspections, maintenance checks, and prompt reporting of any issues to the appropriate supervisor or maintenance personnel.
  • Understand and execute proper use of document management systems, proper filing, and document import/export.
  • Travel (50%) for field visits, projects, or meetings.
  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and work rules.

Qualifications

  • Required: A high-school diploma with a minimum of 3 years electric utility or telecommunications industry experience.
  • Required: Valid driver’s license along with a clean Motor Vehicle Report. Must attend and pass the Davey Driver’s Safety Course.
  • Required: Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Required: Proficient in CAD/Outside Plant Engineering design software (Ike), PLA software (Pole Foreman), Microsoft office applications, Google Workspace, and data entry.
  • Required: Strong communication skills including written and verbal. Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Draft intelligible, professional, and accurate correspondence. Effectively and clearly communicate and present information in one-on-one and group.
  • Required: Apply understanding to carry out detailed instructions. Identify, address, and resolve
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field from an accredited college or university.
  • Preferred: 3-5 years prior electric utility or telecommunications industry experience.
  • Preferred: Electric hazard identification, electric equipment identification, or communication equipment identification capability.

Physical Requirements

  • Write, type, file, and organize documents and information

  • Observe and respond to instructions, messages, and other oral communication.
  • See and judge the distance and size of objects
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods of time, including standing, reaching, and moving items weighing up to 65 pounds, with the potential for heavier loads when working with multiple people.
  • Must be able to easily bend, reach, hold, and grasp.
  • Walk and carry equipment for distances up to 8-12 miles per day on varied terrain.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Working in diverse environments such as roadways, fields, forests, remote, or urban areas.
  • Exposure to a variety of vegetation, animals, and insects.
  • Perform work in the presence of distractions and in public areas.
  • Time spent riding in vehicles and/or ATVs.
  • Standing, walking, and working on uneven terrain for extended periods.
  • Working in noisy and potentially hazardous environments, requiring adherence to safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Exposure to a variety of people, communities, and traffic conditions.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, and other environmental elements.
  • Risk of electrical shock.
  • Exposure to pesticides.
  • Long hours and occasional weekend work, depending on project demands.
  • Temporary relocation to a job site with overnight accommodations in hotels or group housing.
