Home Management

Adjusting to living outside of college or home can be both exciting and challenging. Living independently may require proactive problem-solving. Here are some key tips for handling common home management issues you could encounter:

Using a Plunger

  • Use a cup plunger for sinks and a flange plunger for toilets
  • Ensure a tight seal over the drain and plunge firmly – push and pull vigorously
  • Repeat as needed to clear the clog

Unclogging a Sink or Shower Drain

  • Remove visible debris (hair, gunk) with gloves
  • Use a drain snake or wire hanger to pull out blockages
  • Pour boiling water & baking soda/vinegar to dissolve minor clogs
  • Use a plunger, ensuring water is present for suction

Stopping a Running Toilet

  • Check the flapper inside the tank and close it if stuck
  • Jiggle the handle to reset the flapper
  • Adjust the chain or float if it is too loose or tangled
  • Turn off the water supply using the valve behind the toilet if needed

  • Call 911 and evacuate if you smell burning or see smoke—don’t reset the beaker!
  • Find the breaker box (usually in a hallway, basement, or utility closet)
  • Look for the tripped switch (it will be in the middle position)
  • Reset the breaker by flipping it “Off” and then back to “On”
  • Unplug devices to avoid overloading the circuit
  • Report the issue to maintenance

  • Keep the fridge/freezer closed—better to throw out food if unsure
  • Check for service outages online and contact your provider or landlord
  • Ensure you have an emergency kit: flashlights, batteries, portable phone chargers, water bottles, non-perishable food items

  • Check for Smoke or Fire!
  • Replace the batteries and press the reset button
  • Clean the alarm using a vacuum or soft brush
  • Contact your maintenance staff for assistance
